Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has always interested me.  It probably started at birth when in my mothers arms I would smell the menthol scent from the ointment she was treated with at the time.  It continued when I was 6 or 7 years old and my mother would add Eucalyptus oil drops in the bedroom humidifier.

I have done a great deal of research on the net and elsewhere (all references are here below) regarding aromatherapy and Essential Oils.  The accumulation of my research has taught me a great deal and I realise now the incredible amount of existing Essential Oils and armoatherapeutic plants.  I stopped at 101 for you.  Detailing the latin names of the plants, their properties, indications and counter-indications.  I have also set up a page noting the main aches or pains and the main Essential Oils (EO) used.  These informations are for information only!!  I am no aromatherapeut and would invite you to call a competent person before starting to use any EO.

Before you start reading all the information I have gathered about Aromatherapy and the Essential Oils, I would like for you to read the following article.  I has been written by someone perfectly competent and talks about the dangers of misuse of EO.

Essential Oils are very dangerous products if used intempestively.  This articles removes responsibility from the administrators of Spare-Time for all inconsiderate use of Essential Oils by third parties.

The Essential Oils represent a phenomenal quantity of energy since they are the concentration in millilitres of some few hundreds of kilos of energy, sometimes a few tons of natural products.  One must know how to use them smartly and not just play a guessing game.

The first thing to do is to be informed and to know exactly what we are talking about: note for instance that there are 16 EO in the "citrus" family; also note that there are 5 different sub-groups of "Citrus Aurantium".  Under these conditions, simply saying "Citrus Aurantium" is insufficient.  The properties of each sub-group are totally different.

All is left for you to do is to follow a quality course tought by an aromatherapeut.  These courses involve chemistry, physics, botanic and more.

Past these considerations, let us get deeper into the subject and let us see why the EO are dangerous.

The EO administration is always based on a "physiological dose".  Generally speaking, this physiological dose is of 4 drops.  However, some individuals - and one cannot guess who - may only require a dose of either 3  or 5 drops.  You might think that one drop is not going to make a difference, one drop is not that much.  Give 4 drops to someone who can only take 3 or can take 5 might not be of any consequence ... Big mistake! (detailed explanations are in the full article in French on the following page:  http://www.aromalves.com/article.php3?id_article=49)

" INTOXICATION BY ESSENTIAL OILS "

Seen the power of aromatic molecules one accidental ingestion of EO may, considering the type and quantity, generate a high toxicity or coma and even death.

High doses of most EO will cause gastric problems more or less important which may be softened by taking 30ml of vegetable oil (no matter which type).  The softening action of the vegetable oils but above all the dilution of the EO will reduce the irritability of the stomach.
